our 2012 calendar is now ready to order, and this year it comes with a fantastic twist...


this year peace photography is proud to partner with 'their bucks coffee' and the 'center for development in central america' to offer a combo package of photo-calendar and organic '43 families' coffee.

the photos and the coffee both come from the remote mountain coffee co-op community of 'el porvenir', in the leon region of nicaragua.  all proceeds from calendar/coffee sales will benefit projects and development of this same community.

details of the '43 families' coffee:
-- full bean, full city [medium] roast
-- arabica, organic certified, hand-picked, patio-dried, grown under migratory bird-friendly rustic shade
-- the co-op is paid well above the fair-trade-certified price per pound
-- purchased, imported, and marketed by 'their bucks coffee'
-- roasted and sold online year-round by 'little river roasting'

about the community of 'el porvenir':
members of this co-op [former sandinista, contra and somoza soldiers, all parties to the country’s brutal civil war in the 1980’s] are now a model of social reconciliation.  united by their poverty, these 43 families grow some of the world’s best organic, shade-grown coffee.

el porvenir is a two hour, bone jarring, four-wheel-drive trek away from civilization.  the 270 people lived in a community with no electricity, no telephone, and no running water, until the CDCA helped install limited solar power and pumped water  in 2009.  they jointly own one vehicle, a 1972 ford tractor.

about the 'center for development in central america':
all proceeds from calendar sales will go to the CDCA, which supports the 43 families of the el porvenir coffee cooperative.  the CDCA [www.jhc-cdca.org] has partnered with el porvenir for over 10 years to export and market their coffee while obtaining fair-trade prices, provide loans to invest in the coffee growing process and to obtain organic certification, provide medical and dental visits to the community on average of 6 times per year, fund a teacher’s salary, and invest in water and electric projects.

[it was while serving as a volunteer coordinator with CDCA in 2005-2006 that i took the photos in the calendar, while living in the community for a month.]

about 'their bucks coffee':
their bucks coffee was founded by members of a presbyterian church in mt. pleasant, south carolina, after a visit to el porvenir and CDCA in 2003.  their mission is to buy coffee directly from el porvenir and to pay them more than world “fair trade” price for it, while using all profits from the sale of coffee to assist the farmers of el porvenir directly.

where you can purchase in person in the minneapolis area (and why):

-- the world jubilee fair trade market: november 19
-- fair trade holiday gift sale: december 11

-- purchasing in person eliminates my shipping costs and therefore increases the profit that is sent to the CDCA.

-- likewise, if you order online and would like me to personally deliver your order within minneapolis instead of shipping via USPS, please indicate this in the "comments" section of the paypal order, and i will be happy to do so.  [just within minneapolis proper, please -- i don't want to drive out to white bear lake in a rush-hour snowstorm or anything like that...]
